WindowsWiz was started by Walt & Linda
Smith in 1985 as a desktop publishing and printing company we
called ProTouch. Back in 1984 Linda won a competitive grant to
use a desktop publishing computer system with her basic skills
students to create a professional newsletter that was published
and distributed to all residents in her school district. We
found this new technology so productive we decided to invest in
desktop publishing equipment of our own.
Working
evenings and weekends Walt & Linda created flyers, booklets,
programs, resumes, etc. on what was at the time some rather
expensive computer equipment. Over the next few years we found
that because of our knowledge in the field, more and more we
were being asked by friends, and friends of friends, to repair
computers and provide computer training. Having been a network
administrator for a large printing company this was a natural
evolution for Walt. Computer repair and analysis comes naturally
to him. He believes in fixing what caused the problem on PC’s,
rather than reformatting and starting over. Because of this, the
computers he repairs not only work better, but almost always
come back to the customer with their data intact.
Meanwhile
people would call us before they bought their computer, and tell
us what they wanted to use it for. Walt would research, find
them the best deal, install software and set up the computer in
their client's home. Linda, being an award winning teacher, would provide
on-site training on the customer's PC. Some of Linda's
accomplishments in education can be seen on her website
www.crystalballscience.com.
Linda has become so busy with her state
and national affiliations that she no longer has time to do
training, but Walt is still famous for finding the perfect
computer at the best price and setting it up in our customer’s
homes. He’s also well known for getting the most out of the
computer you have through upgrades, system clean-ups, virus
removal and installing wireless networks in the homes and
offices of
our customers.
As more small businesses found the
benefits of computers and networking WindowsWiz found a niche
with businesses large enough to need a network but too small to
have a full time IT staff. Business became so busy that in 2000
Walt left his day job to pursue WindowsWiz full time.
As computers have evolved, so has
WindowsWiz. Walt's typesetting and computer programming skills
turned out to be a natural fit for website design. Working
mainly with html, flash and JavaScript he began creating websites.
Word of mouth has increased this part of the business and
website design is becoming the major focus of company today.
Since one of Walt’s passion is figuring out PC’s and setting up
networks these services are still available locally.
So, what started out over 30 years ago
as a hobby and passion has become a valuable resource for our
very loyal customers, who we now call friends.
